Sergio began working in the restaurant business in upstate New York when he moved to the U.S. in 1975 from Argentina. His aim was to learn English and thought he would only be here two years but his relatives got him a job in the family’s restaurant and the rest is history.
Sergio’s appreciation for food from around the world started with his parents, who moved from Italy to Argentina after World War II. He and Lena, who is originally from Ukraine, married in 2002 and opened Sergio's Caffé soon after. Their vision of opening a modest restaurant with affordable, good food has far exceeded their initial goal to the delight of their well pleased customers.
Sergio's Caffé opened in November 2002 in the cozy Mill Street space in Grass Valley. After a rocky start, which included having to sell their car to meet expenses, Sergio and Lena decided to expand their business when Karma Coffee closed it’s doors down the street. The new 1,700-square-foot space have outdoor seating with heaters and 45 seats indoors. The new Caffé have also an open kitchen, wine bar and enough room for live music.
